Mathematics Department Mission Statement:
It is the mission of the Alice C. Stelle Middle School mathematics department through the coordinated efforts of its faculty to provide a program such that all students will be inspired to achieve and excel in the highest level of math possible. The goal of the mathematics department is to maintain our high state scores by continuing to teach the state standards at the highest level. With the implementation of technology in our instruction, we are using authentic real-world problems in our curriculum.
Below is an excerpt From: Mathematics Content Standards, Introduction, July 23, 2007:
Goals for students to achieve are as follows:
- Develop fluency in basic computational skills.
- Develop an understanding of mathematical concepts.
- Become mathematical problem solvers who can recognize and solve routine problems readily and can find ways to reach a solution or goal where no routine path is apparent.
- Communicate precisely about quantities, logical relationships, and unknown values through the use of signs, symbols, models, graphs, and mathematical terms.
- Reason mathematically by gathering data, analyzing evidence, and building arguments to support or refute hypotheses.
- Make connections among mathematical ideas and between mathematics and other disciplines.
California State Standardized Testing
- Our week of testing will be in May. Each grade level has different test needs.
- In mathematics we test according to the current math level.
- Sample test problems for all subjects can be found at the following site. Click and check out the test problems according to your child\'s grade level. Good luck!!
Placement
We believe in placing your child in a math class that will allow him/her to find success and enjoy mathematics. To ensure this, we test the children annually to review their current math level. That score in conjunction with their math grade and teacher recommendation will determine their fall placement.

ACS SUMMER MATH REVIEW
A. C. Stelle is providing a summer review math program for you to review and prepare for fall.
We have set up a review for all grades for fall on Khan Academy.com
We created a video tutorial to get you started and, hopefully, to answer your questions. This can be viewed at: http://youtu.be/2IrQyIyeoGA
After you login at Khanacademy.org you will go under profile to chose

as your coach. Please start at a topic that you know--this is for review or remediation, not acceleration. Do 3 problems in a row correctly..that is proficient..move on to the next topic!!
Grades 6,7,8 will start in the arithmetic prealgebra section. All accelerated students are expected to attempt the harder levels of problems. 8th graders going into algebra will start in the algebra section/linear equations and attempt to do as much of the left side of the topics as possible. 7 accelerated students will also work onthe algebra column through linear equations: 2 step problems.
